The complexity of the legal system is such that no one should think about trying to enter that maze without the assistance of an experienced attorney. That's especially true in Connecticut cases in which drug-related charges are involved. If you are facing multiple drug crime charges, it's even more necessary to be in touch with an attorney in order to understand your rights and explore all possible options.

The case of a young Wilton woman serves as a possible illustration. Police charged the 19-year-old woman this past week with a whole array of drug charges stemming from the possibly drug-related death of her 20-year-old boyfriend late last month.

According to UConn police, the case developed this way. Officials say they received an emergency call on Jan. 24 about a man not breathing at the Mansfield Apartments. When police arrived, they found Pawel Sywak there. An ambulance was called and he was taken to Hartford Hospital. He reportedly died two days later.

In the course of the subsequent investigation, authorities arrested and questioned the 19-year-old girlfriend. They allege that during interviews, she admitted hiding several bags of heroin. They claim she also admitted to injecting drugs before emergency personnel arrived at the scene. Further, they say the woman lied about how drugs found in the apartment had been obtained and held back information about how Sywak became sick.

The woman is charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of heroin, tampering with evidence, interfering with police, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of making false statements. She's reportedly due to be arraigned Feb. 28 in Rockville Superior Court.

Still lingering is a question of what the actual cause of death was. Police say that's still being determined.
